Our Story

Pastor’s Welcome

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the John Wesley United Methodist Church website! We’re happy you are visiting and we hope you enjoy learning about our church.

Our purpose and vision is to “Love God…Love Others…Serve the World.” And we seek to do this in many ways. Worship is an integral part of who we are, with beautiful music, prayer and fellowship. I think you’ll find my Sunday wordship messages address needs and concerns that we all face, as we consider how our Christian faith can sustain and support us in our daily living. I invite you to listen to my sermons under the “Worship” tab or click here. We also believe that spiritual growth is important, so we offer a variety of studies, discussions and opportunities for learning and growing together, understanding that we are all on different places of our faith journey. We have an active, vibrant youth group, and an ever-growing Sunday School program for children of all ages. We open our doors to several community support groups and organizations and we participate in various outreach ministries.
All of us yearn for acceptance, love, mercy and purpose, which can be found in a personal relationship with our loving God.  We, at John Wesley value and respect people of all races, colors, economic levels, sexual orientation, and gender identity.  All are welcome!

I invite you to visit our “Beliefs” page  or click here to learn more, and I would be happy to talk with you, show you around and answer any questions you might have about our church, Christianity, the Bible or our faith. We hope you’ll join us on Sunday!

God bless you on your journey,

Pastor René

Who We Are

We are a welcoming church, committed to living out our motto:

Love God. Love others. Serve the world.

We offer a variety of worship and learning opportunities to help deepen our love for God. In the summer, we even hold services on the beach! Throughout the year, we have small groups and Bible studies to support spiritual growth.
We believe the Christian faith is meaningful and relevant in today’s world. That’s why we strive to put our faith into action by loving and serving one another—within our church, our local community, and beyond.

We deeply value children and youth, and we aim to help them navigate today’s culture with faith and confidence. We welcome and respect all people, regardless of race, age, ability, or sexual orientation.

Join us for our Traditional Worship Service at 9:30 AM in the Sanctuary of John Wesley.

The service is also streamed live on our [website], Facebook, and YouTube.

Children’s Sunday School (Grades K–4) and Nursery Care are available during the service in the Education Wing.

We also share weekly updates and monthly newsletters to keep you informed about what’s happening in the life of our church.

Our History

Long-time Falmouth resident and member of John Wesley UMC, Bob Dinsmore, sharing the history about Methodism in Falmouth and our church.

Methodism has been active in Falmouth since 1807 when people met in private homes. Later, houses of worship were built in Falmouth (called “First Methodist Church,” formed 1811), East Falmouth (formed 1857), West Falmouth (formed 1871) and Woods Hole (formed 1884, closed 1970). In 1934 the East Falmouth Methodist Church burned and subsequently closed, merging its congregation to the First Methodist Church on Main Street. After a large increase in membership, the church on Main Street bough a parcel of land on the corner of Lakeview Avenue and Gifford Street. Construction began in the spring of 1956 and the dedication service was held on Easter, 1958. With the new location, the “First Methodist Church” became “John Wesley Methodist Church.” Over 60 years later, John Wesley United Methodist Church is still standing in the same location with the same spirit. Everyday we strive to keep the faith and make disciples of Jesus Christ by loving God, loving others and serving the world.
